Help a Wounded Marine get a new home

In my inbox Wednesday afternoon:

Hello everyone!

I hope that you are all doing well. I know it’s been a while since we’ve asked for help or support for our hero, but there has been a new flurry of activity in the Emery camp recently!

An incredible organization, “Homes for our Troops” is building an ADAPTIVE home for DJ! This is a wonderful organization and an incredible opportunity for DJ and Carlee! Since 2004 this nonprofit organization has built 40 specially adapted homes for severely injured veterans who have returned from service in Iraq and Afghanistan. These homes, and DJ’s home, will be built at NO COST to the veteran, but only with our help!!!! Homes for our Troops is looking for foundation grants, corporate sponsors and volunteers to make this project possible! Fundraisers are also needed! DJ’s dream has been to build a home for himself and Carlee that includes a therapy room and is fully accessible to him, I am so excited that this dream of his is coming true! Below is the link to DJ’s page on the Homes for our Troops website where you can donate or sign up to volunteer. There will also be a registration day for interested trades-people and volunteers to sign up to help build the home for DJ from 1-8 p.m. tomorrow (Thursday 5/7/09) at the Ramada Conference Center at 1450 S. Atherton St. in State College. There will also be a presentation given at 6:30 by project manager Rick Goyette. DJ will be participating in the presentation!

Please, please, PLEASE pass this email along to anyone and EVERYONE you know. It is going to take A LOT of wonderful people stepping forward to make this the success that DJ deserves!!!!

Here’s the link:

As always, thank you all so much for all of your help and support!!!!

2008 Project Valour-IT Fundraising Competition

Update 11/15/08, 2:39pm CDT:

Team Army is in second place with $11,037. Total raised overall, so far: $36,473. That's not quite 15% of the $250,000 goal.

It's that time again. Time for the annual Project Valour-IT Fundraiser. Yesterday, I joined Team Army and added the team donation button to the sidebar over at Miss Ladybug.

This morning, I received an email from the man who got this whole thing started:

The valour-IT project is out of cash--unless we raise the funds to keep going, it will cease to exist, and the DOD will issue voice software to people who don't have computers to run it.

As of this writing, just over 5% of the goal amount ($250,000) has been raised.

Last night, I found Chuck's post explaining what it's like to try to use a computer without the use of one's hands:

Okay, this is really cool.

First, if you haven't already, maximize your browser window.

Next, (and this is critical) put your drink/cereal/whatever down.

Next, and this is also critical, (trust me--I work for the gummint) you must put your hands under your legs until you finish reading this post.

Now, start reading.

Some of my first memories in the hospital were of an angel at my bedside. Not the winged, harps and choruses kind of angel, but an angel in Human form named Kathleen.

I don't remember what she first said to me. I don't remember much really, but to this day, I still remember the soup.

...

Soon Kathleen told me there was clear broth to be had

...

There was just one

small

problem:

I didn't have anyway to feed myself. My hands were bandaged, my shoulders swollen from being dislocated, I had tubes coming out of my arms, which had swollen so much from infection that I now sport scars on both where they had to cut them open to keep them from splitting open on their own--an armpisiotomy, if you will.

I could continue this story, but I won't right now, because if you're reading this, you've failed to follow instructions. You pulled your hand out from under your legs, and either used you mouse or touchpad to scroll down this far.

Being able to use a computer sure is nice, isn't it?

I had the privilege of meeting Chuck's amazing wife, Carren, the weekend of October 18th at SpouseBUZZ Live in San Antonio. She is a strong advocate for Valour-IT and what it gives to our Wounded Warriors who have lost the normal use of their hands, even temporarily. This is an important program, and we should all do whatever we can to ensure that it continues to help those who need have given so much for all of us. This year's theme is "give up something to give to the troops". So, even if all you can do is skip that weekly $5 value meal at McDonald's, it's the least that can be done for them... Please donate. You have until Thanksgiving!

A Virtual Veterans' Day Parade

From CJ @ A Soldier's Perspective:

Just a reminder for those that have signed on to participate. The cutoff for sending me your images or ideas is November 4th! If you or a fellow milblogger want to participate, I just need three things: the name you'd like us to use, a "float" (basically an image associated with either your blog or your feelings about Veterans Day), and a brief description of what Veteran's Day means to you. If you don't have an image, we can try to create one for you. Just send us an idea of what you're thinking about. The Virtual Veterans Day will be composed of a scrolling images or floats along with your names, blogs, and thoughts on Veterans Day. I've only got about 14 participants right now, which means only $280 for Valour-IT. I'm sure we could do much better than that. I still need some info from a few of you, which I'll remind through email.

veterans day

Greetings fellow milbloggers and assorted opiners of liberty!! For those that don't know me, you haven't had your head in the sewage much and I applaud you for it. For those that do, I apologize again. I write this to ask for your help in arranging a virtual Veterans Day Parade that will be hosted on the YouServed blog and I would like to enlist your help (yes, even if you are/were commissioned, you're being enlisted for THIS cause!).

Here's what I need from you. First, of course, is participation. This hasn't been done before and if we pull this off I may have a shot at being the next writer for Blackfive during the upcoming television series "So You Think You Can Blog For Blackfive"!!

We'd like to get at least 30 participants for the "parade", but the more the merrier. For every participant I can get, the VA Mortgage Center will donate $20 to VALOUR-IT. That's right, for EACH participant.

Second, I need you to contact other milbloggers and ask for their participation. For blogs like ASP, Mudville Gazette, and Blackfive where there are multiple authors, each participant will count as a separate person for this purpose.

Finally, I need each milblogger to provide the following information:

Name or screenname
Blog URL
Character "float" you'd be and why you picked it (for example: Snoopy because he was the Red Baron - a veteran like no other!!)
Personal thoughts about Veterans Day.

You can either send me the picture you'd like to use for your float or we can make one to use. The picture can be something you create or just an image you like that reminds you of Veterans Day and speaks to your "float". Please forward this post to your favorite milbloggers and have them contact me if they're interested. Share this on YOUR blogs and snatch this up into emails to milbloggers as well. The deadline for this is November 4th - one week prior to Veteran's Day.

Obama now playing the flip-flop game with Israel.

"Fucking lying piece of shit!"

Those were my thoughts when I caught a news report describing Obama's backpedaling on the issue of Jerusalem today. Yes, I've now revealed my inner potty mouth. Except, as my best friend, Miss Ladybug knows, my inner potty mouth often comes out to play. (I am a South Park Conservative, after all).

I am so constantly infuriated by this guy who cannot stand by ANYTHING he says. Okay, there may be one or two things here or there that he hasn't flipped or flopped on (yet), but it doesn't take a genius to see that he constantly is changing his position, according to who he is speaking (down) to.

My personal favorite is his statement that, knowing what he knows now - that the surge in Iraq was in fact successful - he would still vote against it. For political reasons no less. At least he was honest in that statement! Of course, it took a second to get past all the "Uh, um..." Maybe for the first time in this painful campaign. And it was aired on ABC - maybe a handful of Obamabats took a second to go "Huh? Wassat?" On second thought, that's probably too much to hope for! I honestly don't know how or why our delightful MSM has chosen this lying piece of shit for their personal Jesus.

And speaking of Jesus, I would be embarrassed to have to explain away his 20 year association with a church in which the goals seems to be some sort of Black Supremacy mixed in with Marxism. Of course, the MSM doesn't have to explain anything - they just don't bother to report it. Thank God that the ratings for MSM liberal rags and cable news channels are in the toilet. I just hope this means that the smell of coffee is in the air as Americans everywhere wake up to this reality check.

Oops - gotta go! Time for Mr. Bill! :-)

Dianetics=Scientology

I just saw a new commercial on the Discovery Channel. The commercial went something like this:

"We have overcome the highest heights.
We have overcome the darkest depths.
www.Dianetics.org"

What many may not realize in watching this commercial, is that Dianetics and Scientology are one in the same. At this point in time more and more people are learning about of Scientology. If you haven't done so already, take the time to look over http://www.xenu.net/ and http://www.lermanet.com/. The recent set of interviews by actor Jason Beghe have also shed more light on Scientology.

If this commercial captures your interest in its mystery (something like those "Now What?" commercials - does anyone know what that is all about?), make sure you do a little online research before visiting the website. Take some time to check out the Scientology Website as well as the sites listed above. It is always good to know both sides before forming an opinion or planning a course of action. Even one of the main critics of Scientology feels that it is important to look clearly at both sides before making a decision.

Lyric Mezzo Back in Action!!!

For anyone who actually checked my blog from time to time, you know that around June 2006, I stopped posting to my blog. I think I did one post after that, but it was just about a reality TV show I'd been following. Since June of 2006 I've been working full time for a company that does not allow you to surf the net, check your personal email, write blogs, etc. Basically, they want you to, you know, work! I was spoiled at my previous position and able to blog all day if I wanted - and some days I did!

As the months went by in my new position, I began to feel very cut off from the world. I couldn't keep up with the day-to-day political news as I had, since I could no longer access my favorite blogs (Malkin, Vodkapundit, CJ, etc.) and see what was stirring. I had to rely on my best friend, who would often send me news either via email or snail-mail. Since we did not have access to high-speed internet at the time (yes, we are out in the boonies), I couldn't do a whole lot of blogging in the evening - not if I wanted to maintain a relationship with my husband!

Eventually I moved into a management position and am now able to at least check Fox News on a daily basis - which I do! Lucky for me, Fox is actually the most unbiased, biased news out there! (figure that one out!) Still, I found myself wondering about others like me. I work eleven hour days and then come home and teach music lessons. Until November of 2007, I was working in every spare minute on my doctoral research. Now that I am officially "Dr.", I cherish every bit of free time I have. I do love to get on the 'puter and check things out, but I no longer have the time to really dig into an issue, do the research and comment intelligently on it. I teach three nights a week, and my husband goes to school three nights a week - unfortunately, they don't line up! I cherish the time we have together - and without a laptop, I have to go to our back office to do any blogging, writing, whatever, which means I would see even less of him.

How is someone like me supposed to keep up? I don't trust the mainstream media, and although Fox news tends to run constantly in the breakrooms (it's CNN in the cafeteria), I don't go to lunch (I take a long lunch and go to the gym). I try to stay informed, but I am limited in what I can do. Miss Ladybug tries to keep me updated on issues, but I don't always have the time to follow the links she sends me.

I worry about the average working American out there who isn't even as well-informed as I am. Do you all realize that much of the presidential debate will be won and lost on sound bytes? Who is watching the debates? Who is following the issues? When did it become so hard to stay informed while actually living life?

I am happy to say that I have been offered a full-time teaching position that starts in the fall. Finally I'll be doing what I love - what I trained to do! Maybe I'll have a little more time to blog and keep up with the issues. Until then, I'll check into Fox news every day at work and try to do a little blogging now and then. Actually, in my position, I've run into some interesting things, but have not had the time to do any writing on them. For instance, Al Sharpton spoke for our Martin Luther King event - and I was pleasantly surprised that he did not take the "victim" approach. Even though it's been a while, I just may need to go ahead and write about that one!

I'm very glad that Miss L has continued to cross post, so as to not put me completely into inactive status! I will try to get back into the swing of things. Meanwhile, I need to go and make some plans for the coming semester! Woohoooo!!!!!!
